Setting up and Using Cisco VPN Client on Sandwell Schools Broadband Network

 

The Cisco IPSEC VPN client is the preferred connection method for external users of internal systems on the Sandwell Schools Broadband network.

Schools wishing to apply for VPN client access should contact Broadband Sandwell.

The following notes are instructions for use for approved users.

1. RESTRICTIONS

The Cisco VPN client tool is for the named user only.
The school has signed an acceptable use agreement to govern the use of the attached tool.
Please ensure that its use always complies with the agreed conditions.
Failure to do so may result in withdrawal of the VPN Client.

 

2 REQUIREMENTS

You will have been sent an email that should contain all required information. Please locate on this email:

The attachment, which ends in .pcf. This is the account profile, which you will need later. This will need to be downloaded to the "external" computer.

Your VPN username and password

A second username and password for downloading the VPN software. We are not permitted to place this on an "open" web server.

You will also need:

A suitable computer to connect "from". You should ensure that all work on this computer is backed up before you start; Broadband Sandwell will not accept liablilty if the installation causes the loss of any existing work.

A suitable broadband connection from the external computer

3. INSTALLATION


(a) On your designated school based computer system:


Ensure that the computer is listening on the port that you are connecting to:
If this was the remote desktop connection port (3389), right click My Computer, Properties, Remote tab
Choose "Allow users to connect remotely to this computer"
Click OK

  • PLEASE NOTE: The designated school based PC MUST BE TURNED ON to access it remotely.
  • It must have the IP address used on the request form (and it should be set up to keep this address)
  • It should have the correct Subnet mask for the school (these will be 255.255.255.0 for primary schools and 255.255.252.0 for high schools
  • It should have the correct gateway address, this will be 172.18.something.254. Check with the Broadband Sandwell helpdesk if you need help here.
  • You should consider making the Windows logon passwords that you use harder to guess. Call Broadband Sandwell for advice.

(b) On your external (home or 3rd party) PC

1. Ensure that your computer system has up to date anti virus software installed.

2. Create a folder on your computer system e.g. c:\software. (or equivalent on Apple systems)

3. Download to this folder one of the following software tools

NB: a separate username and password is required to access this software. This will have been provided along with your VPN details. If not, call Broadband Sandwell.

4. Browse to c:\software, double click on the downloaded vpnclient zip file
(NB older systems may require the installation of a zip extraction tool such as Winzip or WinRAR).

5. Inside the zip file there is a folder named vpn client.
Locate this folder and open it

6. Locate the file Setup.exe inside this folder and run it.
This will initiate installation of the vpn client software.
***NB *** Please note that Broadband Sandwell will not accept any liability for problems occuring
as a result of installation of this software. Take a backup before you start***

7. Accept the default settings to install the software, click to accept the license agreement if prompted

8. When complete, run the VPN client software (Start.. Program files.. Cisco Vpn Client.. Vpn Client)

9. Import the profile (this is the <<filename>>.pcf attachment in your introductory email)

10. Disconnect and close the VPN Client tool

 

4. USAGE

(a). Ensure that your designated school based computer system is switched on and connected to the network

(b) Ensure that your home or 3rd party PC has broadband internet connection

(c) To connect using the VPN Client and Windows Remote Desktop

1. Run the VPN client software (Start.. Program files.. Cisco Vpn Client.. Vpn Client)
Your username and password will have been provided in the email
Once connected, Minimise the VPN Client main window
When minimised, the VPN client leaves a padlock icon in the system tray (bottom right)

2. Use suitable software to connect to your school based computer system
(if you are using remote desktop connection, this will be the Windows desktop connection software:
Start.. Programs.. Accessories.. Communication.. Remote Desktop Connection)

3. (if you are using remote desktop connection) Use the Login screen to log in to the remote computer.
You can use the system as though you are sat at the computer.

4. When finished, always log out of the remote system (Start.. Log Off). Do not just close the remote window.

5. Disconnect from the VPN client (right click the tray icon, then choose disconnect) to allow local use of the PC.

6. Exit the VPN Client (right click the tray icon, then choose Exit VPN)
