Project Title : Learning To Care CD-ROM

Summary of Project : (Describe what the project will do and who it will affect)

At present there is a shortage of people working with in the care sector. A review of staffing in the local and independent social care sector of Black Country and West Birmingham Regeneration Zone by EKOS consulting found that the minimum number of care staff they will need to recruit by 2005 is 1,790. The Learn To Care project aims to increase the number of qualified care workers within the Black Country Regeneration Zone and to increase the retention rate of employees.

The Learn To Care project is looking to develop a multimedia resource based on CD-ROM to raise the awareness of care and the roles that are available within the sector. The CD will be a key resource in marketing the recruitment and training of care assistants.

The recruitment programme will be produced as a menu driven CD-ROM designed specifically for use by interested candidates in conjunction with employment workers. It will primarily be used in job centres/ neighbourhood learning centres and the main client group that it will be targeting are unemployed job hunters.

The NHS has already successfully used this recruitment technique to attract suitable applicants.

The main things the CD will offer:

•  Specific information on the roles within the community care sector with a detailed break down of what the job entails and the qualifications/ experience required.

•  “A day in the life” video diaries

•  A “career escalator” showing progression from one role to another through training and experience demonstrating that working in care is a career.

•  Training – detailing the courses available, course contents and what partner organisations offer them.

•  A quiz – this will be a “fun” exercise to be a guide as to what qualities and skills are required to work in care. The results of the quiz may act as a guide in suggesting what types of work they should look at within the care sector e.g. managerial, care related or “hands-on” care. This quiz will not be of I.A.G quality and is not offering specific careers advice. The CD –ROM is to be gone through with an IAG accredited staff member.

•  Links page to partner organisations – offering detailed information about the partners involved in the Learn to Care project.

These features will lead to better-informed candidates with an improved understanding of the care sector roles and what the work entails. It will also encourage people think about working in care as a career option.

The CD-ROM will give job seekers a more informed choice about working in the care industry and the training courses that are available to them.

Ultimately the CD-ROM is expected to improve the marketing of the project and assist in getting more people into work and training within the care industry and promoting care as a career whilst helping Learning to Care achieve there (Advantage West Midlands) targets.

Development Activity: (What support is expected from CHOKE)

To make use of their multimedia developers time to develop and create a user friendly interactive multimedia CD incorporating:

•  Basic CD-ROM Structure and design

•  Production of Flash Intro

•  Populating 110 pages with data

•  Producing (approx) 3 x 5 minute video clips

•  Design of database for the quiz

A future plan for the CD-ROM is to make it available on the internet so the CD should be in a suitable format for easy future transfer.

Who will benefit from this project?

There will be three main benefactors from this:

The Care Industry – they will benefit by finding it easier to recruit better-trained staff that understand what the job entails.

The Learn to Care project – will benefit by having more outputs and building capacity

The Public – will benefit by being able to make better-informed decisions about what career route to take and what training is available to improve their skills and career.
